FIRST Lego League is one of the STEM-based competitions that help students learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics using robotics. In the FLL challenge, teams receive new themes every year and have to design and manage operations of their Lego robots when completing the tasks assigned to the teams during the competition on the field. Consequently, kids get the chance to be creative and come up with different ideas.
Also, teams complete an innovation project based on the theme of the current year by researching, analyzing possible ways of dealing with the problem, and presenting ideas. Students get to know how important it is to effectively deliver information and explain everything clearly by presenting projects to the judges.
Generally, cooperation, discovery, and respect form the basis of the FLL mission since kids learn how to work together, analyze problems, and find solutions using certain strategies. As students invent something, code, and test their invention, they feel how rewarding success can be even after multiple attempts at failure. It is essential to emphasize that FIRST Lego League is not competitive; it offers plenty of growth opportunities.
As a team, we started by not really knowing each other and not knowing the fundamentals of coding and designing. But as we slowly progressed through the season, we began to trust and listen to each other and learn the basics of coding and overall design. One month into the season, we fully trusted and truly listened to each other, and we were getting the hang of the software and robot game.Â
